Congress of Black Women of Canada - Edmonton Chapter

We are a voluntary, non-profit organization which is dedicated to improving the wellbeing of Black women and their families. Striving to empower Black women, CBWC - Edmonton creates a safe space in which Black women may connect together to openly examine the issues which affect us.

Events

Through a program of service and education, we actively contribute to and participate in the life of the communities in which we live. We reject the tradition of oppression and exploitation that has excluded Black Women from mainstream society in the past.

Our Beginning

The first Conference of the Congress of Black Women Canada was convened in Toronto in 1973 by the Canadian Negro Women’s Association and chaired by the late Kate Livingstone. The enthusiastic response to Black Women coming together in support of one another resulted in subsequent conferences being held in Montreal (1974), Halifax (1976), and Windsor (1977) - where it was unanimously moved that a national organization be created. Representatives from across Canada were elected to form a National Secretariat. The Congress of Black Women of Canada was launched at the Winnipeg (1980) conference, a constitution was ratified, and a national executive council was elected.

But what did I learn of us? Of you and I, the Black women who through choice, or luck, or by birth, make this our home. Where do we fit into this space and into the changes and development that are taking us?
— Rosemary Brown at First National Congress of Black Women - April 7, 1973
